Timor-Leste (East Timor) Coffee

East Timor isn’t as widely known a coffee region as the big hitters like Brazil or Colombia, but its organic coffees are exceptional and unique.

Coming from smallholder farmers working by hand on rugged mountain slopes, these coffees have a distinctive depth, with gentle acidity, herbal and spicy notes, and a velvety texture, offering a unique taste of Southeast Asia. The "Hybrido de Timor" varietal, which is a natural hybrid of Arabica and Robusta, enhances this region's distinctive characteristics.

Archived and out of season products

Speciality coffee is a seasonal product. While we work hard to source our coffee from the same farms each year, there is always variability. These are coffees which we have had in the past and may (or may not) have again in the future.

Archived

?

Archived products are unlikely to come back into stock. This can happen for many reasons, e.g. a limited coffee lot, the farmer no longer grows this coffee, etc.

Out of Season

?

Out of season products are likely to come back into stock next year. Coffee is seasonal and we try to maintain long lasting relationships with the farmers we work with.

Sold out

?

Sold out products are likely to come back into stock soon. This is usually due to a small delay in delivery or roasting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes East Timorese coffee so distinctive?

Isolation and traditional farming methods result in a cup with flavours that are quite unlike any other origin. The use of native Typica and hybrid varietals adds complexity to the flavour, with savoury undertones detectable over some soft fruit sweetness. This makes East Timorese coffees truly memorable and worth seeking out.

Why are so many coffees from East Timor organic?

As a result of East Timor’s remote locations and small scale of the farms, synthetic fertilisers and pesticides are rarely used. Most farmers rely on natural methods that have been passed down through generations, with much of the coffee thus being grown organically even without official certification.

What is the history of coffee in East Timor?

Coffee has been grown here since Portuguese colonisation in the 19th century, and the island’s native Hybrido de Timor variety has influenced coffee breeding worldwide. This deep & complex heritage is another part of what makes these coffees so unique.

What tasting notes are typical?

You’ll often find herbal, spicy, and cocoa notes in East Timor coffee, complemented by subtle dark fruits and a smooth body. These flavours reflect the island’s rugged character and its traditional processing methods.

Which brew method suits East Timorese coffee?

This is subjective, and ultimately down to your own personal preferences. To our mind the filter and cafetière highlight the warmth and complexity of the cup, but it also produces a mellow, earthy espresso for those who prefer a more robust coffee experience.

Are you East Timor coffees ethically sourced?
