This beautiful natural coffee jumped out of the cupping table on our sourcing trip to Guatemala earlier this year.
Julio Peréz is the 4th generation of his family at Finca El Zapote. His farm, located high in the beautiful volcanic hills of Acatenango, is over 100 years old. Originally El Zapote grew sugar cane for panela: unrefined whole cane sugar, and it was Julio’s grandfather who planted the first coffee on the farm. Today, the coffee production has increased to 52 hectares – the majority of the farm. Julio’s son and nephew create the various lots based on daily pickings. Julio’s son is also a skilled barista, and teaches brewing at barista schools.
When asked about the future of coffee, and what he would like for Finca El Zapote, Julio says his goal for the farm is to secure long term relationships enabling him to share more of the profits with his workers.
