What is the purpose of a business? Rather than jus

What is the purpose of a business? Rather than just generate profit, how can businesses also serve the best interests of their community and the planet.

We’re thrilled that Glen Lyon’s Jamie (pictured here visiting one of the farms we work with in Bolivia👆) was chosen by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry to be one of 25 Business Purpose Commission members to look into how purpose led businesses can foster a prosperous, flourishing and fair society in Scotland and beyond.

Here at Glen Lyon, we have strived from the start to prove that the coffee community can work towards positive change. We’re proud to have pioneered compostable coffee packaging in Scotland, plant trees in the highlands to pay back our carbon debt and do our best to care for the people we work with. Last year we set up a Coffee Academy that works to support young people in our community into employment and have recently become a certified B Corp.

The SCDI’s Buisness Purpose Commission has today published its report on the findings and you can find a link to the report via our latest journal post. There is also a link to the video case study that was done on our roastery and an interview with Jamie that is definitely worth a 👀

It’s amazing to think of the sheer amount of work that goes into that final cup of coffee. From the producers that take such painstaking care to picking and processing the coffee ‘cherries’ to the often mind boggling logistics involved in getting those beans from some of the remotest corners of the world to our roastery in the Highlands.

Right now our Red Stag Espresso is a blend of the seasons freshest beans, directly sourced from the wonderful Fazenda do Lobo in Brazil and the superstar producers of Bolivia’s remote Uchumachi community.

We first bought coffee from Juana Mamani in 2011,

We first bought coffee from Juana Mamani in 2011, back then she was just 27 years old and had recently won second prize in Bolivia’s Cup of Excellence for her stunning coffee.

Now married to Juan Mamani (there are a LOT of Mamanis in Bolivia!) Juan and Juana along with their two daughters continue to grow spectacular lots on their small farm in the remote community of Uchumachi where they process their coffee on a small mechanical depulper and dry the beans on raised beds in the sun.

The Mamani Family have built up a enviable reputation for producing some of Bolivia’s best coffee and are part of the brilliant @agricafebolivia Sol de Mañana project which helps producers with training and necessary skills to improve the quality of their farms.

We’re so excited to have bought this coffee for another year running and look forward to sharing it with you. With its muted acidity and delicious notes of fig, cacao nibs and soft stone fruits, this is a coffee to fall in love with for sure 😊

A lovely day for a saunter in the beautiful hills above the Loch Turret Reservoir. Epic views, swathes of blaeberry patches (although no fruit to be had yet) and a lot of wild wind on the tops. Feeling recharged and renewed for a busy week ahead roasting exciting new coffees.
